Gaming Subscription Penetration

Gaming subscriptions have higher penetration relative to hardware ownership than any other category. 71% of Nintendo Switch owners subscribe to Switch Online — partly because online multiplayer requires it. 52% of PS4/PS5 owners have PS Plus. Xbox Game Pass at 18% has lower penetration but higher spend per subscriber.

Game Pass vs Game Purchasing

The Game Pass value proposition depends critically on usage patterns. A subscriber who plays 4+ included games per year that they would otherwise buy (at €60 each) gets excellent value from Game Pass Ultimate (€215.88/year). A subscriber who primarily plays one or two games (especially FIFA/FC, which is not included) gets limited value.
